Competition & Competitor Analysis: My Favourite Film

Avengers: Age of Ultron made $1,405,035,767 globally and it was released in the week of May 1st 2015.

Far from the Madding Crowd

Far from the Madding Crowd was less successful than Avengers: Age of Ultron because this film made $12,229,314 in the USA which was a lot less than Avengers: Age of Ultron made.

This film has not got many very well known Hollywood actors other than Carey Mulligan. People who know Carey Mulligan may want to watch this film because of her. However some people may choose not to watch Far from the Madding Crowd because the director Thomas Vinterberg is not that well known, unlike Joss Whedon who directed Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Another reason why this film may not have been as successful is because of the amount of countries the film was distributed to. Far from the Madding Crowd was only shown in a few countries whereas Avengers: Age of Ultron was distributed to more countries around the world which is why it made more money than far from the Madding Crowd.

Far from the Madding Crowd is a film which is based on an 1874 novel which Thomas Hardy wrote. One reason why this film was not as successful as Avengers: Age of Ultron is because this film is a drama which may not appeal to a younger audience, whereas Avengers: Age of Ultron is an action film which may appeals to a wider audience.

Another reason why this film may not have been as successful as Avengers: Age of Ultron is because Avengers: Age of Ultron is part of a series which might have interested more people than Far from the Madding Crowd.

Welcome to Me

Welcome to Me was less successful than Avengers: Age of Ultron because this film made $608,852 in the USA which was a lot less than what Avengers: Age of Ultron made.

This film has not got many very well known Hollywood actors other than Kristin Wiig. People who may know her may want to watch this film which means that this film will not bring in as many people as Avengers: Age of Ultron. The cast for Avengers: Age of Ultron is better known such as Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and many more, which therefore means that people may want to watch this film more.

Another reason why Welcome to Me may not have been as successful as Avengers: Age of Ultron is because Avengers: Age of Ultron is part of a series which might have interested more people than Welcome to Me. It also may be because the director who directed this film, Shira Piven is not as well known as the director for Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The reason why this film may not have been as successful as Avengers: Age of Ultron is because this film is a comedy drama which may not have brought in as many people as Avengers: Age of Ultron which is an action film. One reason could be that people in general may like action films more than comedy dramas and Avengers: Age of Ultron is a fast paced film so people may have gone to watch this film more because of this.

Welcome to Me and Avengers: Age of Ultron were released on the same week but Avengers: Age of Ultron got the largest amount of money for that week which shows that Avengers: Age of Ultron was more successful than Welcome to Me.

Gerontophilia

Gerontophilia was much less successful than Avengers: Age of Ultron because this film made $3,975 in the USA which was nowhere near to what Avengers: Age of Ultron made.

There are no well known Hollywood actors that were cast in Gerontophilia, which may not have interested as many people. This may have affected their film in terms of the Box Office money they earned. The reason why this may have been the case is because Avengers: Age of Ultron has more well known actors than this film.

Another reason why this film may not have been as successful as Avengers: Age of Ultron is because this film was shown only in a few countries. Gerontophilia may have engaged with more people if it had been shown in more countries just like Avengers: Age of Ultron was.

The idea for this film is quite unusual because it is about a guy who is obsessed with elderly people. The idea for this film may appeal to some people however with Avengers: Age of Ultron would appeal to a wider audience because it is about superheroes which is less likely to offend people or make them feel uncomfortable.

Avengers: Age of Ultron earned the most money from the week it was released. Gerontophilia may not have been as successful as Avengers: Age of Ultron because people may have wanted to watch Avengers: Age of Ultron more because it is part of a series.

Product Market Research: My Favourite Film

Avengers: Age of Ultron made $1,405,035,767 globally with a budget of $250,000,000.

Taken 3

This film was less successful than Avengers: Age of Ultron because it made $325,659,280 globally which was less than what Avengers Age of Ultron made.

The budget for this film was $48,000,000 which was a lot less than the budget for Avengers: Age of Ultron. This may have affected the film quality as less money was spent on Taken 3 than Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Taken 3 has not got many well known Hollywood actors other than Liam Neeson, which means that this film will not bring in as many people as film with a well known cast might. Avengers: Age of Ultron has got a lot more well known Hollywood actors such as: Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson which mean their fans may have watched the film just because they are in it.

The plot for this film was quite complicated which won't appeal to as many people. Children may not understand this film whereas the plot for Avengers: Age of Ultron is much simpler and would appeal to everyone.

This film was the most successful in the week it was released, which means that there were not many films in competition with it.

Furious 7

This film was more successful than Avengers: Age of Ultron because it made $1,515,047,671 globally which was more than what Avengers: Age of Ultron made.

The budget for the film was $190,000,000 which was less than the budget for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Furious 7 was more successful than Avengers: Age of Ultron despite having a smaller budget. With this film they have spent less money on hiring well known cast members so that the quality of the film would not be affected. Whereas, Avengers: Age of Ultron had to spend more money because the cast contained more well known actors.

Furious 7 has got a few well known Hollywood actors which are: Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker and Jason Statham. Even though the cast for this film may not be a big as the cast for Avengers: Age of Ultron, the director for Furious 7, James Wan, is more well known than the director for the Avengers: Age of Ultron, Joss Whedon, which may have brought in a larger audience to Furious 7.

The storyline for this film was linked with the other films in the Fast and Furious series which may have appealed to the audience because it is part of an ongoing series.

The film was more successful than any other film that came out that week and it was one of the most successful films in 2015. This may have been because Paul Walker died before the film was released and a lot of people went to watch it as a tribute to him.

Terminator Genisys

This film was less successful than Avengers: Age of Ultron because it made $440,603,537 globally which was less than what Avengers: Age of Ultron made.

The budget for this film was $155,000,000 which was less than the budget for Avengers: Age of Ultron. This film had a smaller budget because they did not use as CGI or as well known actors as Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Terminator Genisys has not got many well known actors in it other than Arnold Schwarzenegger who was in the original Terminator films made by James Cameron. As this is a remake and produced by someone else who is less well known, the cast is different from the original cast and because of this people may not have wanted to watch the film.

The storyline for this film was not original and some ideas were taken from the original Terminator films. This may have appealed to some people who watched the original film and want to see what the new producers have done with it. However some people may not have wanted to watch a remake of film they already thought was good.

This film was the most successful film that week, however Magic Mike XXL also came out that week which meant there was more competition for that week. This may have been why Terminator Genisys was less successful than Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Meet My Audience Profile

Favourite film focus group

Focus group on Avengers : Age of Ultron
4 people took part in my focus group, all of which had seen the film. The focus group lasted 10 minutes and 22 second and in this time I asked them 5 questions about Avengers: Age of Ultron and also about sci-fi films in general.

Question 1
What makes a Sci-fi film?

One person in the group had the view that Science fiction films are films that are based loosely on reality. The films take current idea's that we have and make them real inside the film. THe example that was used was the A.I, Ultron that was in the film. They said that A.I's are something that we are currently tying to create but have not been able to yet.

Other people in the group had an opposite view to this. They believed that sci-fi films are completely fictional and have no connection to reality and nothing in the film is real can cannot become reality. They are used for escapism

This shows the two different views on science fiction films. Some people enjoy it and like the concept of that the stuff in the film could come true. On the other hand some people don't really enjoy it as much because of the fact that it is complete fiction.

Question 2
What in the trailer compels you to want to see the film

They started off by saying that the first think that would compel them to go see the film was the actors and actresses, as most of them are big A list actors. They then continued to say that because it is a sequel, they would want to go see the film even if they hadn't of seen the trailer as they would want to see had the story continues and also to see if the sequel is better than the first film. Someone also added that it was Marvel and said how they are known to make great films.

from this it showed me that most people would want to go see the film because of the people that are in it and also who made it. This can show that more people would want to go see the film if they like the actor or the company that is making the film. It also told me that people want to see how a story ends and thats why they go to see sequels.

Question 3
Do you think the trailer portrays the film well and shows what the film is about?

The whole group think that the trailer gave away too much of the story and that people who have read the comics or have seen all of other films could be able to dissect the trailer and figure out what the film could be about easily. They felt that there were things in the trailer that could of been left out as there were a lot of the good scenes from the film were in the trailer which made them less funny when watching.

This then tells me that most people felt that it did portray the film and shoed that if was about, but it gave too much away and ruined some of the scenes that were in the film, which made it less enjoyable.

Question 4
From the poster, what do you think the film is about?

They started off by says that the posted showed that the avengers would come together to fight an evil, and that it showed it would be an action film. One person said that it reminded them a lot of the poster from the first film. Another person felt that it did not have much representation of the film and what it was about, and that it shows the cast and that the some of the characters (Iron man, Captain America, Thor and Hulk) where at the front and the biggest while the other characters (Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Fury) were all smaller that them even though they are also main characters.

Question 5
what is your favourite scene in film? for both story and how it looks?

One person in the group in the group liked the scene where Hawkeye takes the team to the 'safe house' where his wife and kids lived. No one on the team knew about his family and it was unexpected so surprised them. They said it helped show the realistic side of what the team has to go through Another person liked the scene where the hero's are  back to back protecting the core that is holding up the city. They liked the way it was shot and how it showed them working together yep separately at the same time. Another person said that their favorite scene is.

Question 6
Couldd you tell that Joss Whedon trie to concentrate more on Hawkeye and Hulk?

One person said that they think that the way Hawkeye was shown in this film was one very well and added to the main plot and story of the film. It helped show that there was a story behind the characters. .with Hulk it is was very forced and was not essential to the film

Question 7
Do you have anything else to say about the film?

The group felt that they had played it safe with this film as it continued from the last film and added lots to the story but left out enough that they are able to continue the story in other films. It helped continue the story. But they felt that it was nothing special compared to the original avengers film, that Age of Ultron is just there to a to the story a bit, there is not much new about it.

Conclusion

In conclusion, from this focus group it shows that this film was enjoyed by most people. That most people think that the story was done well and so was the action in the film. But even though people liked the film they had a few problems like with the added hulk story and that the film was nothing special, that it was just like the last film but with a different story.

Quantitative Survey Research: My Favourite Film

Avengers: Age of Ultron

16 people completed our survey.

Q1 analysis

For our first question we asked people what was their favourite genre in a film. In our survey we showed a list of all the genres that can be used in a film, such as: action, adventure, animation, comedy, crime and many more. We also made this question multiple choice. We allowed the audience to choose up to three genres they liked in general for a film. I found out from our results that most people prefer comedy with 12 out of 16 people choosing this option. The next highest was the action genre with the total of 6 out of 16 people choosing this option. Documentary was chosen five time. Adventure and Musical were chosen three times. Animation, Sci-FiFamily, Horror and Thriller were chosen two times. Fantasy, Drama, Crime, War were chosen once. In our results, we saw that nobody had chosen mystery, romance, sport or western as their favourite genre. This reason why this may have been the case is because the audience may like these genres when mixed with another genre. It is also possible that a lot of people watch comedy channels which may make them want to watch a comedy film.

Q2 analysis

We asked people whether they have watched the film or not. The result was a shocking surprise to us as we found out that 11 out of 16 people had not watched the film. The reason why this may have been the result is because they may have not liked the trailer so they may have not watched the film, or they are probably are waiting for it to come online so they can watch it for free.

Q3 analysis

We asked people how they would rate the film. We made this question a rating scale question so we would know how the people felt about the film overall. From our results we found out that 7 out of 15 people skipped this question. 5 out of 8 people had rated the film as average, this may be because they may have not liked the characters in this film or the storyline. However the rest of the people chose bad or very bad. The reason why this may have happened is because the CGI may not have been effective and the sound effects were not effective for them.

Q4 analysis

We asked people whether they have watched the other films in the Marvel series. We made this question multiple choice so we would know whether they had watched some or none or all of the films in the Marvel series. One person skipped this question. 8 out 15 people had not watched any films in the Marvel series. This may be because they are not interested in superheroes. 3 out of 15 people chose some and the remaining 4 chose all. The reason why there may have been this type of result is because some people have interest in other superheroes so therefore they would go and watch that film instead of this one.

Q5 analysis

We asked people about their favourite Avenger. We made this question a multiple choice question so we would know who their favourite Avenger is. 3 people skipped this question. 6 people chose Thor. The reason is probably to do with his strength and his special power which makes him unique within the Avengers group. The next highest was Black Widow with 3 out of 13 people choosing this option. 2 people chose Captain America and the remaining people chose Scarlet Witch and Iron Man. No one chose Hulk, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Vision.

Q6 analysis

We asked the people whether they think CGI is important for a science fiction film. 2 people skipped this question. 8 out of 15 people said that CGI was sometimes useful in a science fiction film. 4 out of 15 people said that it was very important, and 1 person said that it was not important at all.

Q7 analysis

We asked the people about whether they thought that the CGI was effective in this film. Half of the people skipped this question with only 8 answering it. 5 out of 8 people chose yes and the rest chose no. The reason why there may have been this type of result is because the CGI may have been used too much in this film through the apocalyptic scenes which may have made this scene look too fake.

Q8 analysis

We asked people whether they thought the music was effective in this film. We did this as a rating scale question so that we would know what they thought about the music. 7 people skipped this question. 4 out of 9 people chose did not notice, 3 people chose sometimes effective and 2 people chose very effective. We know that 11 out of 16 people had not watched the film so they would not be able to answer this question. However we found out that 3 out of the 11 people who had not the film still tried to answer this question which made out result look unreliable. The reason why this result may have occurred is because some people may have told them about the film and that is probably why they still answered the questioin

Q9 analysis

We asked people what was their favourite sub genre in a film. In our survey we showed a list of all the sub genres that can be used in a film, such as: superheroes, utopian, dystopian and many more. We also made this question a multiple choice. We allowed the audience to choose up to two genres they liked in a film. 1 person had skipped this question. 5 people chose mystery. We found out from our results that dystopian, superhoeroes, and time travel were equally weighted with these options being chosen 4 times each. The reason why it may have been like this is because most people like watching films that type of sub genre within a film. The next highest were apocalyptic with these being chosen 3 times. Aliens and monsters and horror were chosen twice. However in our results, we saw that nobody had chosen utopian as their favourite sub genre. This reason why this may have been the case is because the audience may like these sub genres when mixed with others.

Q10 analysis

We asked people how important they think certain conventions are in a Science Fiction film so we would know on what they thought about these convention. in our survey we showed a list of the convention that can be used in a science fiction film, such as; Mythical Creatures/Characters, Futuristic/Alternative Timeline, Other Planets/Space/Unexplored Locations and many more. We also made this question a multiple choice. For each convention we ask how important they thought it to use it in a science fiction film. Below is our result of 14 out of 16 people who answered this question because two people skipped this question.
